From January 7th to 31st, Southern California experienced a powerful, dry storm known as the Santa Ana winds, sparking numerous wildfires. Fuelled by strong winds, the fires intensified, raging for 24 days. Agence France-Presse quoted Christina Dahl, vice president of science for the independent American organization Climate Headquarters, as saying that the rapid spread of wildfires is generally associated with factors such as high temperatures, drought, and high winds, with "temperature being the most obvious climate signal." The Copernicus Climate Change Service, the European Union's climate monitoring agency, noted that both significant heat waves were associated with the "heat dome phenomenon." What is a "heat dome"? It's a phenomenon in which a high-pressure system traps hot air at the surface, causing temperatures to soar across regions. It's like a "pot lid" covering a hot region. This prevents normal convection and exchange of hot and cold air inside and outside the lid, exacerbating the high temperatures and leading to more severe "heat stress disasters."
Zhang Tao, chief forecaster at the China Meteorological Administration, explained that "heat dome" isn't a well-defined academic term; it's a general, figurative, and popular scientific term used by some forecasters abroad to describe the physical causes of high temperatures.
According to online data released by the World Meteorological Organization's Regional Climate Centre for Regional Association VI (Europe), more than two-thirds of Europe's extreme heat events since 1950 have occurred since 2000. The frequency and intensity of extreme heat events in Europe are also increasing. It is projected that by 2050, approximately half of Europe's population may be at risk of high or very high heat stress in summer, with Southern Europe being particularly affected. Risk levels in Eastern, Western, and Central Europe will also rise significantly. Data from 2025 shows that in Spain, 260 cases were confirmed to be directly related to heat stress in June alone.
