China is a big maritime country with a long coastline and rich coastal zone resources. The coastal zone economy plays a very important role in China's economic aggregate. The coastline of China's mainland is 18,400 km long, and the coastline of China's islands is 14,247 km long. The total length of the coastline exceeds 32,600 km, spanning 22 latitudes. If calculated according to the isobathic line extending 10km to the land and 10km to the sea, the area of the coastal zone accounts for about 13% of the total area of China. Forty percent of the nation’s population and 60 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) are concentrated in this region. The ocean is a strategic location for China to achieve high-quality development in the future, a blue space for building a new development pattern, and an important support for starting a new journey of socialist modernization.
The fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) clearly proposed to "adhere to land and sea overall planning, develop Marine economy, speed up the building of a maritime power." In < the 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People's Republic of China and the Outline of 2035>, a separate chapter is devoted to "actively expanding the space for Marine economic development".
In December 2021 of the State Council <on the 14th five year plan for marine economic development> is further pointed out that to "space layout optimization of marine economy, accelerate the establishment of modern marine industry system, to improve the marine science and technology independent innovation ability, coordination to promote marine resources protection and development, to maintain and expand the national marine rights and interests, open sea connection, we should enhance maritime strength, follow a development path featuring maritime prosperity, maritime power, harmony and win-win cooperation, and speed up the building of a maritime power with Chinese characteristics."
While adhering to the traditional position of marine transportation industry, marine shipbuilding industry, marine tourism and marine fishery, China is actively promoting the development of marine medicine and biological products industry, marine renewable energy utilization industry, seawater desalination and comprehensive utilization industry and other emerging Marine industries. In the development process of these industries, a large number of traditional metal materials are needed to build port docks, LNG terminals, breakwaters, islands, island buildings, seawater desalination facilities and other buildings. However, metal materials have obvious congenital disadvantages in the application of Marine facilities construction:
(1)The corrosion resistance of metal materials is relatively poor, which is easy to cause a lot of rapid corrosion, increasing the maintenance cost and reducing the service life;
(2)The large thermal expansion coefficient of metal materials (large temperature difference along the coast) reduces the bond performance with concrete, which leads to wall cracks easily, and may eventually lead to wall collapse, resulting in serious safety accidents.
(3)Metal material thermal conductivity is too high, used in outdoor buildings such as guardrail, too high temperature affects the sense of use, too low temperature and easy to condense frost on the surface;
(4)Metal materials have magnetic properties, which will cause equipment failure or inaccurate for buildings requiring no magnetic infection, such as island radar station and intelligent dock.
(5)The density and weight of metal materials are high. When building materials need to be transported from the mainland to the island, the transportation cost and installation cost are relatively high.

3. Long Life Cycle: FRP/GFRP products are very durable, therefore, can reduce later maintenance and upgrade costs;
4. Low Moisture Absorption: unlike many plastics, the moisture absorption of FRP products is very low, even if it is soaked in water for a long time, there will be no obvious size change or mechanical property loss.
5. Low density and light weight: the density of FRP is 1.9~2.1g/cm3, only a quarter of the density of metal material about 7.9g/cm3. The weight of FRP material is lighter under the same volume, thus greatly reducing the transportation cost and installation cost in the construction process.
